Background

The majority of Amercoat coatings products are now "environmentally designed" with low-solvent, solvent-free and waterborne technologies that reduce the possibility of pollution and enhance workers' safety.

Amercoat coatings, since the 1950’s have been industry-leading coatings technologies. These include:
· Dimetcote (1950), the first heavy-duty water based inorganic zinc silicate primer for steel;
· Amerlock (1981), the first full colour range high-solids, low-solvent, surface-tolerant (i.e., can be applied over intact rust and old paint) epoxy coating for steel and concrete;
· Amershield (1986), the first high-build, low-solvent polyurethane which offers far more resistance to impact and abrasion than conventional polyurethane's, and
· PSX 700 (1993), the first epoxy polysiloxane coating, a new technology that significantly enhances resistance to corrosion, heat, weathering and a wide range of chemicals.

The Amercoat Corporation was established in California in the 1950's and was eventually renamed Ameron Protective Coatings. In 1996, Ameron purchased the Devoe marine coatings business of Imperial Chemical Industries PLC. The acquisition made Ameron the largest supplier of high-performance marine and offshore coatings in North America and also greatly expanded the company's sales and service network and global presence in these markets. Early in 1997, Ameron also acquired the worldwide Valspar maintenance coatings business. Both these product lines are available in Canada through Amercoat Canada.  In 2006 Ameron Coatings was purchased by PPG Inc, a world leader in the manufacture of paints, coatings and glass in addition to Pitt Char XP Fire Protective Coating. PPG has established a new business unit, PPG Amercoat Protective and Marine Coatings.

Manufacturing of Amercoat coatings in Canada is carried out in the Group’s 65,000 sq ft ISO 9001 certified plant in Oakville.  Distribution of our coatings throughout Canada is available through office/warehouses from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, BC in conjunction with General Paint of Vancouver, BC in Western Canada.Amercoat Canada is also the Canadian distributor for Vinyl Ester and Epoxy Novolac chemical resistant surfacers, linings, and floor coatings manufactured by Polyspec Corporation.
